Week 3 Part B: Developing a Brand

I do not have a business of my own. I'm still trying out different things to see what sticks. I have been drawn into the cosmetics/beauty business. So I will be using that for some of my entries. I love this topic of developing a brand, because it's something I point out everywhere to my siblings. Talking about how we know brands with just a symbol or tagline and even color schemes. For example, the well known brand, Louis Vuitton is known for its symbol of LV and their different tones of browns that scream luxury. Even with it being miles away, it can be spotted. It also can give the person wearing it some status. This is what makes people so intrigued with the brand and why it's in high demand.

If I had my own cosmetics/beauty products business, I would want it to be something that's affordable and accessible to all. I was born with a birthmark, some hyperpigmentation, and oily skin. I struggle a lot to find products that work for me. I have searched far and near, expensive and inexpensive products to help with coverage. Unfortunately to this day I haven't been able to find a brand that fits me and my skin. For a while I would constantly tell people "Can't wait till one of these brands caters to my type of skin and my skin concerns" until one day I realized it's been like 5 years and I'm still waiting. That's when the idea popped into my head. What am I waiting around for? I should just create my own.

I have given the thought of my logo. I would want it to be the outline of my birthmark. It is a port wine stain birthmark that is on my cheek. So I was thinking it would be some of that line work art. Like the picture above. Some sort of recreation of that with my brand name incorporated with the line work. At first I wanted to call my brand Lunar Cosmetics, because it means Birthmark in spanish. Except there is already someone out there that has created a beauty brand with this name, so it has send me back to the drawing board. I am not sure about color schemes or fonts just yet. I would use it on all my packaging, webpages, and business cards to keep the logo consistency. I was thinking of creating smaller brands within my brands for different skin concerns and skin types because I really don't believe in "for all skin types." Especially when we all are so different and there really is no one size fits all.

Within my brand I want it to be known for its all inclusiveness. I think the beauty industry has some reconstructing to do. Especially since many promote this impossible beauty standard. They often send out this message that by using their products, you will be a better you. I think this is wrong. A foundation, a eyeline, and eyeshadow is not going to magically fix you or your problems. Within my brand I want to change this message. That you are enough and only deserve the best. Wear make up for you and only you. Wear it because you want it, not because you have to. Be your own artist and be yourself unapologetically. There is nothing wrong with you or the skin you were born in.  I want it where we can customize many products and stuff that actually works for everyday consumers.

I have a lot of ideas of what I want my brand to be but it is hard when I see how there are beauty brands popping up left and right. So it can sometimes be discouraging. I know that having a following and marking yourself as a business owner is also important when I dont have beauty school or anything under my belt but only have my personal experiences. This is why I am also looking for other options.
